Priorat

The DOP Priorat with over 100 wineries is located in Catalonia in the north-east of Spain, only half an hour’s drive
from the Costa Dorada. In the barren and mountainous region the vines are far apart in nutrient-poor Licorella soil.
The first documentary mention of the viticulture of this region was made at the end of the 12th century, after Carthusian monks in
the mountains had founded the monastery of Scala Dei. Old terraces with shrubs have been recultivated, new ones have been created. Organic farming, lowest yields, traditionally gentle ageing in wooden barrels and economical interventions in the production
vinification leads to the aromatic and storable wines.
